Golden event helps give charity fund some welly

22/08/2008

OLYMPIC success in Beijing has been replicated by a different type of gold medal at a charity sports event.

Competitors in the world's first Agri-Lympics, held at the National Forest Maize Maze, in Tatenhill, near Burton, helped raise more than £2,000 for MacMillan Cancer Support.

Eight teams from Staffordshire and Derbyshire took part in agricultural-themed events, including the corn stalk javelin, the welly sprint, straw-bale rolling and the tractor pull.

A team called Doctors on the Job, from the Windscreen Doctors, in Burton, emerged victorious in the medals table to claim the Golden Welly Trophy. Tom Robinson, from the National Forest Maize Maze, said: "The world's first Agri-Lympics was a resounding success. It was a great day of sport both for the competitors and the crowd."

Beverley Smith, MacMillan Cancer Support area fund-raising manager, said: "All the money will be spent locally in supporting cancer patients in hospital and at home."
